Zang-Fu: The Lungs

The functions of the Lungs

The main function of the Lungs are:

  • The Lungs governs respiration as we inhale ‘pure Qi’ and exhale ‘dirty Qi’
  • They rule Qi whereby Gu-Qi combines with inhaled Qi in the Lungs to form Zong-Qi.
  • The Lungs regulate the water passages as refined fluids from the Spleen are converted to a fine mist and sent to the area under the skin by the descending and dispersing function of the Lungs.
  • They direct fluids to the Kidney and Bladder which are responsible for excretion of body fluids through sweat and urine.
  • In the Five Elements model, the Lungs are associated with the element of Metal and the emotion of ‘Grief’ and the nose is the sense organ of the Lungs and seen as the opening of the Lungs.
  • As the emotions are a form of Qi, excessive grief affects the Corporeal Soul, known as the Po, constrain the Po’s feelings and movements and affects a person’s sense of connectedness to the other people.
  • The Lungs descend and disperse Qi and Wei-Qi.
  • Lung-Qi goes down whilst Wei-Qi flows under the skin throughout the body to warm and defend the body.
  • The Lungs also descend and disperse body fluids between the skin and muscles. These are dispersed as a fine mist which moistens the skin and regulates the opening and closing of pores and sweating.
  • Fluids from the Lungs also nourish and moisten hair.
