How to locate and needle Lung 9 Taiyuan (Supreme Abyss)

Lung 9 Location

• Lung 9 is located at the radial end of the transverse crease of the wrist, in a depression on the lateral side of the radial artery.

Lung 9 Needling

• To needle Lung 9, use a perpendicular insertion to a maximum depth of 0.5 cun.

Lung 9 TCM Theory

Lung 9 is the Shu-Stream point for the Lung channel.

Shu-stream points are where are where the Qi of the channel begins to pour and are located at or near the joints of the ankles and wrists.

Shu-stream points are used to:

• Treat heaviness or pain of the joints.
• Treat diseases which come and go such as those due to a retained pathogenic factor.

Lung 9 is also the Yuan source point of the Lung channel.

The Yuan Source points are where Yuan Qi for that organ pools and can be used to balance the organ and the channel.

Lung 9 is also the Earth point of the Lung channel and can be used to treat any conditions of Damp or Phlegm affecting the Lungs or the Lung channel.

The main TCM actions of Lung 9 are:

• It resolves Phlegm in cases of fullness of the chest, asthma, bronchitis and coughing.
• It tonifies Lung Qi and Yin in cases of chronic respiratory symptoms.
• As the Yuan source point of the Lung channel it regulates the Lungs and the Lung channel.
